Ask the Devs #7 Professions

New info from the World of Warcraft “Ask the Devs” global Q&A

Q: Archaeology is supposed to be about discovering, preserving, and honoring cultural items found, in order to learn from the past. Currently we don’t do that. Instead we are forced to coldly vendor what we don’t want. No donation to a museum, no return to the races of origin. Couldn’t we do something more important with these items? Can we expect more interesting stories with artifacts? Will you do something about this to make it feel like the player is getting something useful back, and perhaps remove a little bit of the random part of it so that it’s more fun and focused? – Whitewnd (KR), Pusen (EU-EN), Unjoiner (NA/ANZ)

A: Originally, we didn’t intend to create items at all when you completed a normal archaeology find, but that didn’t feel right. So now we have these items that still don’t feel right because you can’t do anything fun with them. We are working on a more thematic and interesting way to consume the artifacts you dig up. These include returning them to the museums (for the devoted archaeologist) and the option to continue vendoring them (if you wish to continue your career as a cold-blooded treasure hunter.)

Additionally, we plan to add daily quests, a deeper story, additional skill gains, and the flexibility to focus on a specific race.

Some players may not have noticed that all artifacts have lore associated with them in the journal, even the grey ones. Every bit of it is Genuine Lore, and verified by our lore masters. So were the Dalaran Coins, of course, but not those silly Romance Novels. Source Link

Q: Are there any plans to make Archaeology more closely connected with other professions? Like make inscriptors able to create scripts of the night elves that would help with the fragments or something like that? – Алонжи (EU-RU)

A: We feel like we can better tune and balance the archaeology experience if we keep it mostly self-contained. However, we’ve discussed additional methods for gaining fragments through dailies and potentially as rewards for turning artifacts. Nonetheless, it’s quite unlikely that another profession will ever craft keystones or fragments. Source Link

Q: Are there any plans to somehow change Archeology and Fishing, which have become notoriously tedious? Do you have plans to make archaeology more appealing, maybe with puzzles or something else? – Boîndal (EU-DE), Kalani (NA/ANZ), Käworu (LA)

A: Yes. The dailies help with fishing skill gain, and we plan to add archaeology dailies as well. We’ve also discussed further incentivizing fishing in pools with faster skill gain.

We would love to add a puzzle mini-game to archaeology, and may do that one day, but we can’t make any guarantees. There are some other ideas floating around for moving between archaeology sites more quickly, and we’ve been brainstorming for rare random events when you are digging or fishing.

Our overall goal for these professions is that it shouldn’t be too difficult to max out your skill, but catching every fish and finding every artifact should be a long journey. Source Link

Player Project: Time per Solve

Are you curious about how much time (on average) you spend surveying for a project? Well then you’re not alone! Below is a fellow archaeologist who is looking to answer that and they’re asking for your input/help!

Edit – Updated instructions

Morpsend (aka Morpsen) has started a project to gather info, from Archaeologists like you, in order to find the average time it takes to solve an artifact. (Via MMO and Battlenet)

If we can get a group of people to time themselves solving projects we can average them out and give everyone a number to expect it will take per solve.

Instructions:

  • Open the stop watch at the bottom of you minimap and start it once you start to dig.
  • Dig until you have completed 10 artifacts.
  • If you are not using a flying mount then please specify your riding skill.
  • If you get a rare during those 10 solves please solve it, and start over.
  • Make sure to stop and start your stop watch any time you are not 100% devoted to archeology. Such as: if you get a tell and hold a conversation mid digging then stop the time.
(Conversations while in flight to next dig sites are fine) – Also if you afk at any point, stop the time.
  • If you plan to use keystones during the process please add in your reply if you used them or not, and say how many stones you used.

We are looking to get usable avg time it takes to solve an artifact. Keystones will affect the numbers we get. It would be helpful if you do not use keystones.
The more people we get to participate the more accurate an avg number we will have.

We are discounting the time it takes to get a rare in the grand total due to the fact that it would skew the numbers if someone was solving a rare in the 10 solves. We are assuming the extra time to solve a rare is so very small when considering the total time as to discount it completely. Personally I’ve solved 2957 solves total, and only 30 rares. The extra time it took to make those rares wouldn’t come close to changing my average.

Example: I timed myself doing 100 solves which took 1182 minutes for an average time of 11.82 minutes per solve. I used zero keystones. I completed these 100 solves in Kalimdor in 4.0.6. I did not solve a rare during these 100 solves.

Thank you – Morpsend

Minimal Archaeology Addon

This addon was just submitted via our Contact form! I’ve not had time to check it out personally yet, but it looks like a good competitor against the Excavatinator Addon posted a few days ago if you’re interested.

Minimal Archaeology Addon

View all your artifacts progress, and solve them in one compact frame. Also you can view all your artifact history neatly sorted by race, and a list of digsites. You can left-click the keystone button to attach keystones (or right-click to remove), or if you prefer there are options to automatically use keystones! You can monitor the artifacts progress, or how close you are to the 200 fragment cap.

Commands

/minarch

Useful Macros

Use this in combination with the auto-hide feature

/cast Survey
/minarch show

Excavatinator Addon

Noticed that the top two Archaeology addons have not been updated in a while?

Edit: Archy and Archaeology helper are still working fine, sorry for any confusion there.
Second Edit: Archy has (finally) officially updated to 1.8 (for patch 4.1) Download here

Well here’s an alternative for Artifact ‘check-listing’ below.

Excavatinator is a checklist for archaeology. It will list all currently known archaeology projects, and whether you’ve completed each project.

To use:
Type /arch to open the race list. This list shows each race with a project count, your progress on the current artifact, and how many keystones you have. Click a race to open the artifact list.

The artifact list lists all artifacts you can find for that race, and which ones of those you have completed. You can mouse over an artifact to view the item’s tooltip, and click one to insert a link into chat. Note that if the server has not seen the item yet, the tooltip will not be available, the item can’t be linked, and the English name will be displayed instead of the local name.

You can also keybind the Excavatinator window, as well as the Survey skill, under the key bindings menu.

Known Bugs: May 8, 2011 There’s an issue with the Crawling Claw (when its completed), however the artifact count will still be accurate though.
