University given one of the UK's lowest teaching

The outgoing head of the London School of Economics was paid £1.7 million over four years despite the university being criticised for its low teaching standards. Professor Craig Calhoun, who quit a year early last September, was handed £50,000 in bonuses even though his institution was ranked one of the worst places in the country to study. LSE also provided Prof Calhoun with a grace-and-favour flat overlooking the Thames with a market rent of £120,000 a year.

The Russell-group university was recently given a third-class bronze rating by the Teaching Excellence Framework, which ranks universities on their teaching. Students also gave the institution a satisfaction score of just 75 per cent, making it 155th in the country. Details of Prof Calhoun’s pay and perks, obtained by the University and College Union under the Freedom of Information Act, show that in 2015-16 he was given a pay rise to £413,000, making him the tenth best-paid vice-chancellor.
The American academic was also paid £88,000 for international relocation on top of his £378,000 pay package, and last year alone he claimed £8,907 in personal expenses.
