Items from Archaeology have low item levels compared to the new and easy to access gear added in Patch 4.3, Are there any plans to scale or add new Archaeology items that will be relevant to the current content?
We will likely add new items, we didn’t want to compete with heirlooms and give alt characters more gear than they could possibly use, allowing them to level without caring at all about loot gained while leveling. We like the idea of artifacts remaining something that you can trade between characters on your account. If you get a healer trinket that you can’t use right now because you don’t have a healer, it could be something you use one day, rather than solving your healer trinket problems forever. (Source)


Patch 4.3 for Archaeologists

The Hour of Twilight is here and we have a few confirmed changes for Archaeology. (Patch Notes)

What was previewed on the PTR came through to live, tracking archaeology sites via minimap.

Archaeology areas of interest will now show on the mini-map, in addition to the World Map.

Also: Archaeology fragments will now be 5-9 per dig (at max-level), with three digs per site as usual. This is great for new and old Archaeologists to make money off of the grey items and to help finish up the rares you’re missing.

The minimap needs NO Addons anymore for tracking archaeology sites now. But it’s still nice to have certain features from Addons like Archy for right click surveying and tracking your projects.


May 2nd Hotfix (Minor)

If you noticed, while enjoying Patch 4.1, that the new Artifacts were not giving skill-ups, well Blizz hot-fixed that issue in last night’s round of patching. Most people going for the rares probably did not notice this since you guys are most likely maxed already.

  • The new rare Archaeology items should now correctly grant skill-ups when crafted.

Ask the Devs Q&A March 15th

We have a small note from the Q&A posted yesterday about Archaeology. The questions ranged from PvP/PvE balance issues to death knight mastery runeforges to why moonkin don’t have Execute. The Dev team pointed out Vrykul & Fossils as two races that will get some updates soon(TM). There’s also plans to help you focus on farming a particular race at a given time.

Q: Are there any plans to bring new items to Archaeology with each future patch? (Source)
A: We may not make it every patch, but we designed Archaeology specifically with this kind of expandability in mind. Our most immediate plans are to add rare items to the Vrykul and especially Troll races, since they have so few, and add more to Fossils in general since you end up with so many Fossil sites. We also have some plans to make it slightly easier to focus on races upon which you want to focus.

Dec 20th Hotfixes

Cataclysm Hotfixes – Updated Dec. 20

The search radius to find an Archaeology node from the Archaeology ability Survey has been increased. This will result in fewer searches needed while in the “green” range of surveying.


Update: It seems that they made it so that nodes (fragments) can be discovered at a larger range.  It used to be the would always spawn within looting range.  Now they can be discovered a little farther away meaning fewer repeat green surveys.
